Restoring the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Mexico
Help restore the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Michoacán, Mexico, a vital habitat for these iconic insects. Through reforestation and community engagement, this project protects biodiversity, improves water resources, and supports local livelihoods. Join us in preserving this essential ecosystem.
Project Description
The Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Michoacán, Mexico, is a crucial refuge for millions of monarchs migrating from Canada and the United States. These old-growth forests provide the perfect hibernation environment, but illegal logging, forest fires, and land degradation have severely impacted the region.
This project aims to restore degraded areas by planting native trees, improving biodiversity, and securing essential water resources for over 5 million people in Mexico City and its surrounding areas. Through community engagement, local residents gain fair-wage jobs, empowering them to protect their environment while improving their livelihoods.
Since its inception, over 1 million trees have been planted, and extensive fire prevention measures have safeguarded restoration sites. Future efforts include reforesting an additional 30,000 hectares and creating sustainable systems to ensure long-term impact for both people and nature.
Take part in preserving this critical habitat and supporting the monarch butterfly’s extraordinary migration for generations to come.
SDG Goals
Why this reforestation project contributes to these UN SDGs
This project restores forests and protects key terrestrial and coastal ecosystems in Mexico while strengthening community livelihoods and preserving indigenous culture. Through reforestation, sustainable forestry, and habitat protection for monarch butterflies and sea turtles, it supports biodiversity conservation, land restoration, and climate resilience (SDG 13, 14 and 15). Forest restoration also improves watershed health, soil stability, and access to clean water, contributing to safer and more resilient communities (SDG 6 and 11).
The project creates fair employment, supports sustainable local economies, and provides long-term income opportunities through responsible forest management (SDG 8), helping reduce poverty and economic vulnerability in rural and indigenous communities (SDG 1 and 10). Education is central to the approach, with programs for schools and adults that promote environmental awareness, sustainable practices, and responsible resource use (SDG 4 and 12).
Gender equality is actively supported through inclusive employment practices and leadership opportunities for women, particularly in nursery and forestry activities (SDG 5). The project’s impact relies on strong collaboration with indigenous communities, schools, conservation actors, and local stakeholders, making partnerships essential to its long-term success (SDG 17).
Additional Project Insights
The Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Michoacán, Mexico, is a natural haven for millions of monarch butterflies that migrate each year from Canada and the United States. These delicate creatures rely on the region’s old-growth forests to hibernate and recharge before their long journey back north. Unfortunately, years of illegal logging, forest fires, and land-use changes have left these forests severely degraded, threatening the monarchs’ survival and destabilizing local ecosystems.
This project seeks to reverse that damage by restoring the sanctuary’s degraded areas. By planting native trees and engaging local communities, we aim to create a thriving habitat for monarchs while improving water availability, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of nearby residents.
The restoration efforts also play a crucial role in securing the Cutzamala System, a vital water source for over 5 million people living in Mexico City and its surrounding areas. This combination of ecological and community-focused initiatives ensures the long-term resilience of the landscape and its inhabitants.
This project delivers a powerful and lasting impact on both the environment and local communities.
Reforesting the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary strengthens critical habitats for a wide range of wildlife, including 132 species of birds, 56 mammals, and 211 fungi. These biodiverse ecosystems play a key role in regulating climate, preventing soil erosion, and producing clean air.
The sanctuary’s restored forests also act as a natural sponge, improving water infiltration and replenishing groundwater supplies. This benefit extends beyond the local area, securing water resources for millions of urban residents.
Local communities are integral to this project. By employing residents to plant and care for trees, we provide fair-wage jobs that support families and create a sense of pride and ownership. This economic boost is further supported by sustainable farming and agroforestry programs, which offer long-term sources of income and food security.
Our restoration strategy goes beyond simply planting trees—it addresses the root causes of deforestation and ensures a sustainable future for both people and nature.
Native tree species are carefully selected and planted at optimal densities to ensure the long-term health of the ecosystem. To maintain biodiversity, trees are arranged using the “three bolillos” technique, which ensures even spacing and maximum growth potential.
We also prioritize fire prevention and control through training programs and the construction of firebreaks. These efforts protect newly planted areas from the devastating effects of uncontrolled fires, which are a growing threat due to climate change.
Community collaboration is at the heart of our approach. Local residents, landowners, and water boards work together to create sustainable management plans that balance environmental and economic goals. This ensures that the restored forests remain protected and well-maintained for generations to come.
Local communities are the driving force behind the success of this project. We actively involve residents in every stage of the restoration process, from seed collection and nursery development to tree planting and monitoring.
By providing fair-wage jobs, we not only support families but also foster a deep connection between the community and their environment. Women play a significant role in these efforts, with many holding leadership positions in planting and nursery management.
To build long-term resilience, we offer training programs in sustainable farming, fire prevention, and forest management. These initiatives equip community members with the skills and knowledge needed to continue protecting and benefiting from the restored landscapes.
The project also promotes education and awareness by organizing workshops and school visits. These activities inspire the next generation to value and protect their natural heritage, ensuring that the benefits of restoration are felt for years to come.
Since the project’s launch, remarkable progress has been made in restoring the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary.
- Over 1 million trees planted, contributing to the restoration of 12,000 hectares of degraded land.
- 95% success rate in protecting restoration sites from fire damage, thanks to the construction of over 200 kilometers of firebreaks.
- 154 forest fires mitigated, ensuring the survival of newly planted and naturally regenerating trees.
- Thousands of local jobs created, providing families with a stable income and improving community resilience.
Looking forward, we plan to restore an additional 30,000 hectares of forest, further enhancing biodiversity, water security, and climate resilience. These efforts will benefit both the monarch butterfly population and the millions of people who depend on this region’s natural resources.

Customer Reviews
“I gifted my sister a few trees along with a plane trip I had planned for her. She’s very eco-conscious, so I wanted to make sure the trip felt a bit more balanced in terms of impact. She loved the idea, and the fact that she could see where the trees would be planted made it even more meaningful!”
Clara, Spain.
“We chose Bloomy Earth to gift trees to our clients as part of our sustainability initiative, and it was a huge success! The certificate they provide is beautifully designed, and sharing it on LinkedIn allowed us to showcase our commitment to the environment in a professional yet heartfelt way.”
