Restoring Tegucigalpa’s Water Recharge Zones in Honduras
Join us in restoring Tegucigalpa’s water recharge zones and securing clean water for over 1 million people. Together, we’ll replant forests, protect endangered species, and create sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
Project Description
Embark on a mission to restore the Cinturón Verde, Tegucigalpa’s critical water recharge zones, and ensure a sustainable future for over 1 million people who depend on its water resources. For decades, deforestation and land degradation have jeopardized the region’s ecosystems, leading to water shortages, biodiversity loss, and increased vulnerability to natural disasters. This project offers a nature-based solution by combining reforestation, fire prevention, and agroforestry to restore these essential landscapes.
Through your support, we aim to replant thousands of trees across 96,500 hectares of land, develop sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities, and expand biological corridors to protect endangered species. Our holistic approach ensures not only environmental restoration but also socio-economic development, empowering communities to thrive while safeguarding the planet.
Together, we can combat climate change, restore ecosystems, and secure a brighter future for generations to come. By joining this initiative, you become part of a global movement to make a tangible difference. Be the change—plant hope, restore balance, and transform lives today!
SDG Goals
Why this reforestation project contributes to these UN SDGs
This restoration project contributes to climate action by protecting large forested watersheds, strengthening fire resilience, and safeguarding carbon-rich ecosystems critical to climate adaptation (SDG 13). By restoring landscape connectivity between cloud forests, pine-oak forests, and broadleaf ecosystems, it protects biodiversity, reduces land degradation, and promotes the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems (SDG 15).
The project plays a key role in improving community wellbeing by securing vital water resources for surrounding populations, contributing to healthier living conditions and long-term public health outcomes (SDG 3). Through sustainable livelihood opportunities and community-based forest management, it supports income generation, skills development, and dignified local employment (SDG 1 and SDG 8), while prioritizing inclusive participation and reducing inequalities between urban centers and surrounding rural communities (SDG 10).
Its success is rooted in strong partnerships between local communities, municipal authorities, and national institutions. This collaborative governance model enables large-scale landscape restoration, effective fire management, and long-term ecosystem protection, directly supporting partnerships for sustainable development (SDG 17).
In summary, by combining climate resilience, ecosystem restoration, community empowerment, and multi-stakeholder collaboration, this project delivers lasting impact across seven interconnected UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Additional Project Insights
The Cinturón Verde Project aims to restore and protect Tegucigalpa’s critical water recharge zones. This region, encompassing highland cloud forests, pine-oak forests, and broadleaf deciduous forests, is essential for biodiversity, water resources, and community livelihoods. Over the past two decades, widespread deforestation and degradation have disrupted water availability for more than 1 million people. By working with local communities, municipalities, and water boards, this project offers a nature-based solution to address the urgent water crisis while creating sustainable livelihoods and strengthening biodiversity.
Through the reforestation of degraded lands and the implementation of sustainable practices, the Cinturón Verde Project delivers measurable benefits:
- Improved water supply and climate resilience for urban and rural communities.
- Protection of endangered species such as migratory birds and other local wildlife.
- Creation of sustainable income opportunities for local residents, reducing poverty and reliance on forest resources.
- Significant reductions in forest fires, protecting the long-term health of the landscape.
This project employs a holistic landscape restoration strategy, including:
- Reforestation: Planting native trees in critical water recharge zones to restore forest cover.
- Agroforestry and Regenerative Agriculture: Supporting sustainable farming practices to reduce deforestation pressure.
- Fire Management: Training and equipping local fire brigades to monitor, prevent, and combat forest fires effectively.
- Watershed Management: Improving water cycling and availability for Tegucigalpa’s major water sources.
- Biological Corridors: Expanding and connecting habitats to enhance biodiversity and ecological resilience.
The project thrives on collaboration with local communities, water boards, and municipal governments. By employing residents for tree planting, fire prevention, and monitoring, it provides fair wages and empowers them to take an active role in protecting their environment. Special emphasis is placed on women’s empowerment, ensuring inclusive participation in decision-making and project execution. Community engagement also fosters long-term stewardship of the restored landscapes.
Since its inception, the project has achieved significant milestones:
- 96,500+ hectares: of restoration project area identified.
- 35,000+ trees: planted across the landscape.
- 200+ kilometers: of firebreaks constructed, reducing fire risks by over 95%.
- Thousands of workdays generated, supporting local livelihoods and community resilience.
- Looking ahead, the project aims to restore an additional 30,000 hectares, expand agroforestry initiatives, and strengthen climate-smart farming practices to ensure sustainable impact for generations to come.

Customer Reviews
“I gifted my sister a few trees along with a plane trip I had planned for her. She’s very eco-conscious, so I wanted to make sure the trip felt a bit more balanced in terms of impact. She loved the idea, and the fact that she could see where the trees would be planted made it even more meaningful!”
Clara, Spain.
“We chose Bloomy Earth to gift trees to our clients as part of our sustainability initiative, and it was a huge success! The certificate they provide is beautifully designed, and sharing it on LinkedIn allowed us to showcase our commitment to the environment in a professional yet heartfelt way.”
